Thoroughbred racing's year-end championship, inaugurated in 1984. Known as "Breeders' Cup Day," it consists of eight races, effective with the 1999 season, when the Filly and Mare Turf will be run for the first time. Through 1998, it consisted of seven races. The event is conducted on one day at a different racetrack each year with purses and awards totaling $13 million. The races are the:
$1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint, for three-year-olds and older at six furlongs;
$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, for two-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles;
$2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff, for three-year-olds and older, fillies and mares, at 1 1/8 miles;
$1 million Breeders' Cup Mile, for three-year-olds and older at one mile on the turf;
$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile, for two-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles;
$1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, for fillies and mares three-years-old and older at 1 1/4 miles on the turf;
$2 million Breeders' Cup Turf, for three-year-olds and older at 1 1/2 miles on the turf;
$4 million Breeders' Cup Classic, for three-year-olds and older at 1 1/4 miles.
